The older the single family, the more likely they are suffering from malnutrition! Traditionally, the elderly are particularly vulnerable to malnutrition because of poor appetite, but a study by the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany found that single unmarried, separated or divorced people are more likely to face malnutrition than married or widowed people. The risk, which may prove to be the cause of malnutrition, is not as simple as imagined.
The study also pointed out that how to define or analyze the determinants leading to malnutrition will be a work that the medical community needs to pay more attention to. According to "Daily Science," nutritionist Dr. Dorothee Volkert, who is in charge of the study, explained that when people's dietary intake is drastically reduced and the body lacks energy and nutrients, we define this state as malnutrition. However, this explanation is lacking. A binding scientific definition.
Malnutrition involves a wide range of factors, including weight loss, weakened immune system, or impaired muscle and organ function. To this end, Professor Dorothee Volkert brought together 22 research groups from Austria, France, Germany, Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands and New Zealand to take an in-depth study on the causes of malnutrition in two years.
In addition to finding that the older singles are more likely to suffer from malnutrition, they also intend to propose screening and prevention of malnutrition in the elderly based on collected data. "Lack of malnutrition in the elderly seems to be caused by a series of surprising factors. Not only lack of appetite, age, marital status, mobility, or even climbing stairs can be the cause of malnutrition."
According to the Siasat Daily, a total of 4,844 elderly people between the ages of 72 and 85 participated in the survey. All respondents lived in private homes in Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands and New Zealand, and 4.6% to 17.2% of participants experienced malnutrition during the study.
